En 1519, le capitaine Hernan Cortes arrivait à Veracruz au Mexique afin de conquérir les Aztèques connus pour leur barbarisme et leur énorme force de frappe. Contrairement à ses prédécesseurs qui avaient échoué, il ordonnait à son équipage de brûler les navires et ensuite de passer à l’attaque. Ne pouvant plus battre en retraite, le niveau de motivation de réussite des soldats était à son niveau le plus élevé : c’est ainsi qu’ils conquéraient l’Empire aztèque. Ce récit historique bien célèbre illustre très bien ce que peut réussir un individu qui n’a plus la possibilité de revenir en arrière.
J’ai souvent vu ce principe fonctionner dans plusieurs sphères de ma vie. Je me souviens, il y a quelques années, être parti dans le but de faire un voyage à vélo d’une centaine de kilomètres pendant plusieurs jours. Juste avant mon départ, j’avais « posté » sur les réseaux sociaux mon projet, annonçant aux gens que la prochaine photo de moi serait publiée lorsque j’aurais atteint la destination au bord de la mer.
La première nuit était horrible : un énorme orage et une pluie diluvienne. N’ayant pas dormi de la nuit et mon équipement étant tout trempé, le premier réflexe qui m’était venu à l’esprit le lendemain matin était de plier bagage et de rentrer à la maison. Toutefois, le matin en allumant mon téléphone, je lisais tous les messages sur les réseaux sociaux des personnes qui me disaient avoir hâte de voir ma photo à la mer, une fois arrivé à destination. À cause de mon engagement public, je n’avais plus l’option de faire demi-tour.
Il en est souvent de même dans nos vies. Nous gardons l’alternative de faire marche arrière en cas de difficulté. En raison d’obstacles à la poursuite de nos rêves et de notre destinée, nous abandonnons quand les choses se compliquent ou deviennent très difficiles.

Je te propose de faire comme Cortes : brûler tes vaisseaux. Autrement dit, de te mettre dans une situation où le demi-tour n’est plus une option. J’ai fait des choix dans ma vie où reculer a été plus difficile que d’affronter la bataille. Quand sont venues les difficultés, le fait d’avoir brûlé mes bateaux m’a permis de continuer, de foncer et ainsi de triompher.
Brûle tes bateaux en quittant ton emploi et en poursuivant tes rêves. Brûle tes bateaux en prenant tes économies et en lançant l’entreprise ou le projet qui brûle dans ton cœur depuis longtemps. Brûle tes bateaux et demande en mariage cette personne que tu aimes tant. Brûle tes bateaux et annonce à ton entourage que tu vas perdre 20 kilos et courir un marathon. Brûle tes bateaux et annonce sur les réseaux ton inscription à l’université. La liste est infinie.
L’idée est ainsi de te placer en position où la défaite n’est plus une alternative. Tu vas te battre comme jamais, te dépasser assurément et vivre l’exponentiel, la croissance et surtout voir de tes propres yeux ta destinée se matérialiser. C’est aujourd’hui que ça commence… Brûle tes bateaux !!!
