Il y a quelque temps de ça, j’étais dans un restaurant en train d’attendre ma commande pour emporter. J’ai été frappé par une scène significative. Un père essayait de convaincre sa petite fille de manger son repas, mais il n’y avait rien à faire. Elle boudait, se croisait les mains et répondait non fermement. Elle repoussait même son assiette de façon virulente. À côté d’elle, son petit frère mangeait ses frites avec une joie et une passion démesurée. 

Je voyais ainsi deux enfants, dans le même contexte, la même réalité, mais avec une vision de la vie totalement opposée. J’avais tellement envie d’aller voir la petite et lui dire : « si tu savais le nombre de petites filles dans le monde qui rêverait d’avoir un papa et de manger au restaurant. Tant de fillettes voudraient être à ta place. »

Ensuite, quand je suis sorti, j’ai retourné le miroir vers moi. Je réalisais que moi aussi, dans ma vie, je me plaignais parfois, je boudais alors que j’avais tellement de raisons de me réjouir et de célébrer la vie. Tout est une question de perspective.

Je me souviens, il y a plusieurs années, lorsque je vendais une voiture que je n’arrêtais pas de mépriser à cause de sa couleur. Je n’étais pas en mode « joie de vivre ». Une fois à l’hôpital, je regardais toutes ces personnes malades, certaines en très mauvaise posture, d’autres branchées à des machines, prisonnières de leur situation. 

Une fois sorti de l’hôpital, j’ai pris une grande bouffée d’air et j’ai remercié mon Dieu pour ma santé. Puis, une fois dans la voiture, j’ai mis une musique de vacances et malgré la tempête de neige, les conditions routières exécrables et la fatigue, j’ai presque dansé au volant de ma voiture en me disant : quel privilège d’être en santé et de dormir chez moi ce soir ! Tout est une question de perspective.

L’algorithme pour être heureux, c’est de constamment avoir la bonne perspective. Je n’ai pas le meilleur emploi, mais j’ai un emploi. Je ne suis pas fortuné ces temps-ci, mais j’ai un toit, de quoi manger et une famille qui m’aime. Mes enfants me donnent des soucis, mais j’ai le privilège d’en avoir. J’ai des clients qui me sollicitent sans arrêt, mais au moins j’ai une clientèle. J’ai perdu mon emploi, mais j’ai tellement de compétences et la capacité d’en trouver un meilleur. Je suis célibataire, mais j’ai la liberté de faire ce qui me plait.

J’avais l’impression que 2020 avait été une année pourrie. Mais après avoir fait ma liste, j’ai fini par déclarer de toute évidence que 2020 a été une année extraordinaire. Le changement de perspective a ainsi complètement renversé ma vision de l’année qui venait de passer.
